The most awarded games at The Game Awards

For more than 10 years, The Game Awards have celebrated the best in video games by honoring the works that have made an impact on players and critics alike. A showcase for excellence in gaming, the ceremony highlights titles that stand out for their creativity, technical mastery, or the emotion they evoke. Here, we take a look back at the most awarded games in the history of The Game Awards, i.e., those that have racked up the most accolades, dominated their year, and left a lasting mark on the gaming landscape. Prepare to feel nostalgic...

Let's start our selection with the game that won the most awards in the year of its release: The Last Of Us Part II. It was developed by Naughty Dog, a critically acclaimed studio known for both its advanced technology and its poignant stories with complex characters. In 2020, the title won no less than seven awards, including Best Achievement, Best Narrative, Best Action-Adventure Game, and above all... Game of the Year 2020.

Let's stay with Sony for the latest installment in another of their must-have franchises, God of War Ragnarök, released in 2022. A direct sequel to the previous game, itself voted GOTY 2018, this new installment won six awards at the Game Awards that year. Among them were Best Music, Best Audio Design, and Best Narrative. In 2022, Elden Ring won the Game of the Year award.

Third place on the podium went to Baldur's Gate III, the excellent turn-based RPG developed by Larian Studios. The figures are simply staggering, with 40 million sales and an "extremely" positive rating on Steam with over 700,000 reviews. A total of five awards were presented during the 2023 Game Awards, including the most prestigious, Game of the Year.

We now have to go to Rockstar in 2018 to discover the title that occupies fourth place in this ranking. The suspense is clearly not at its peak, as everyone has already guessed that we are talking about Red Dead Redemption 2. If there are still players who don't know it, it's an open-world action-adventure game. It takes place at the very end of the 19th century, at a pivotal moment marked by the decline of the Wild West and the gradual disappearance of the cowboy era. It is praised for its profound storyline, well-written characters, the quality of its universe, its atmosphere, its realism, and so much more... Critics and gamers alike gave it an almost unanimous welcome, placing it among the masterpieces of its generation. Red Dead Redemption 2 did not win Game of the Year against God of War, but it did win three other awards.

Our fifth place on the podium goes to a title that is much less well known to the general public. Disco Elysium is an atypical role-playing game released in October 2019. The player takes on the role of an amnesiac detective who wakes up in a slum, plagued by alcohol and doubts, tasked with investigating a murder in the fictional city of Revachol. Rather than being a classic RPG with combat, Disco Elysium offers almost exclusively dialogue, narrative choices, and skill tests. The player has 24 skills divided into four main categories (Intellect, Psyche, Physical, Motor), each of which can influence the detective's personality, thoughts, and even inner voice. At The Game Awards 2019 ceremony, it was one of the big winners, taking home four awards, including Best Narrative, Best RPG, and Best Debut Indie Game.

Finally, we would also like to mention the other outstanding titles that won between 3 and 4 awards at The Game Awards. Elden Ring and Astro Bot won a total of 4 awards each, including the most prestigious award: Game of the Year, in 2022 and 2024 respectively. Among the productions that won three awards, we can mention Destiny, the famous looter shooter released in 2014, the timeless Doom in 2016, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in 2015.

Ultimately, the most awarded games at the Game Awards don't just accumulate trophies. It's fair to say that they have left a lasting mark on the industry through their creativity, mastery, and the emotions they evoke. Whether ambitious productions or smaller independent gems, these titles have established themselves as essential references. Looking back on their success, it's clear that the Game Awards, in their own way, are an interesting barometer of the evolution of the industry and the experiences it provides.
